Conference Scope and Topics > Overview of Scope & TopicsRILEM Conference on Sustainable Materials & Structures: Meeting the major challenges of the 21st century - SMS 2024
General themes of the SMS 2024 ConferenceThe conference will aim to present and discuss the recent advances in materials and structures research to meet the great challenges of the 21st century and beyond to:
All these topics will be considered from the material’s perspective, but also from the structure's perspective.
A special focus will be put on the worldwide practices and rationale to meet these goals.
The conference will cover all the topics in the scope of RILEM scientific activities, and will include the following: > At the level of the building materials:
> At the level of the civil engineering structures:
For any of these topics, scientific contributions investigating the time and service related properties, like, early age and setting, service properties, durability, safety, environmental impact, recyclability, will be particularly welcome. Experimental and numerical characterisation of material properties at different scales will be of interest: nanoscale (molecular dynamics, coarse grain models, advanced characterisation techniques), micro-mesoscale (mesoscopic models, indentation, etc.), macroscale (multiphysics characterisation, etc.), and structural scale (SHM, NDT, hybrid testing).
A special focus will be done on the special practices according to the different regions in the world.
Special sessions will be organised on a variety of topics: Bio-based materials and earth construction; Materials for energy storage (Sensible-Heat, Latent-Heat, and Thermochemical), Bituminous materials, Characterisation and modelling on small scales (nano, micro, molecular), Non-destructive inspection of concrete materials and structures, Data-driven concrete science (AI for concrete material and infrastructures), Microorganisms-Building materials interactions, etc.
